Johann Heinrich Jung-Stilling est l'une des figures les plus marquantes de la pensée ésotérique chrétienne en Allemagne à la fin du XVIIIe siècle. Cet ami de Goethe, regardé par ses contemporains comme le Patriarche du Réveil religieux et le héraut du christianisme, nous dévoile une personnalité aux multiples facettes: il se fait un nom en littérature en publiant son autobiographie, devient spécialiste des affections oculaires; nommé professeur à l'université, il écrit des ouvrages d'économie avant de donner la plénitude de son talent dans de nombreux écrits à la gloire de la religion chrétienne. Dépassant le piétisme de son enfance, sa pensée puise aux sources d'une gnose hermétisante teintée de quiétisme, d'ésotérisme et de théosophie. Dans ce livre, l'accent est mis spécialement sur cet aspect souvent négligé de son œuvre. Adversaire déclaré de la théologie rationalisante de l'Aufklärung, Jung-Stilling préconise un retour aux sources authentiques du christianisme biblique. Par son prophétisme apocalyptique, leitmotiv de son œuvre, il veut «réveiller» ses contemporains en leur offrant, au terme d'un parcours initiatique et symbolique, une véritable renaissance spirituelle.
